What is Krav Maga, in one paragraph?
Krav Maga (Hebrew for “contact combat”) was developed in Israel and later refined within the Israel Defense Forces. It is not a sport and has no rules, weight classes or competition rings. Instead it teaches you to recognise danger early, react instinctively, defend and counter-attack in the same movement, and get away safely. Techniques are built on the body's natural reflexes, so they hold up when adrenaline is pumping and fine motor control disappears. If you want the full picture, read what Krav Maga is and where it came from.
Why people in Southport choose Krav Maga
It works under stress
Real attacks are fast, chaotic and frightening. Krav Maga drills are designed to function exactly then — when you are startled, tired or cornered — because the techniques use gross-motor movements your body can perform without thinking.
No fitness or experience needed
You do not need to be fit, flexible or young to start. You train at your own level from your first session, and your conditioning improves naturally as you go. Plenty of our members had never thrown a punch before walking in.
Defend and attack at the same time
A core Krav Maga principle is simultaneous defence and attack: you do not block, then think, then respond. You deflect the threat and strike back in the same beat, so you take control of the situation instead of merely surviving it.
Useful skills, fast
Because the system is built around instinct rather than choreography, beginners pick up genuinely usable defences in their first few weeks — not years down the line.
Your first class
A typical session starts with a warm-up, moves into technique and partner drills, and finishes with pressure-tested repetition. There is no forced sparring and no expectation that you already know how to fight. Our coaches keep everything controlled and safe while still feeling realistic. New to all of this? Our beginner's guide walks you through exactly what to expect, what to wear and how it feels, and you can see the full class timetable before you visit.
Classes for every level
Krav Maga progresses through a clear ladder of levels — from foundation skills such as stance, movement and basic strikes, through defences against punches, kicks, chokes and headlocks, and on to advanced material including weapon defences and dealing with multiple attackers. You start at the beginning and build steadily, with competence valued over collecting grades. See how it all fits together on our levels and curriculum page.
Train in Southport
We are based in Southport and train people from right across the area — Ainsdale, Birkdale, Formby, Ormskirk, Churchtown and Crosby are all within easy reach. Classes run year-round with real continuity, including through the school holidays, so there are no long breaks that stall your progress. Find directions, parking and opening times on our contact and booking page.
Krav Maga compared to traditional martial arts
Many traditional martial arts are excellent sports, but they are built around rules, rituals and competition. Krav Maga is built around the messy reality of an attack: no rules, no referee, and a single goal — protect yourself and escape. If you have tried karate, taekwondo, boxing or kickboxing and found them impractical for real situations, the Krav Maga approach will feel refreshingly direct.
Kids, teens and Children's University
Younger students train too, in age-appropriate classes that build confidence, coordination and respect. Total Combat Martial Arts is a recognised UK Children's University learning destination, so children who train earn Children's University credits (Passport-to-Learning hours) that count towards their Children's University graduation — making the time on the mats count twice over.
